Reading is more than just understanding the words in a text. We always read a text in a specific situation with a specific aim. That’s why we read texts using different techniques: Sometimes we just want to know whether this text fits our question or not, sometimes we are looking for one or more specific pieces of information, e.g. in a product brochure, sometimes we want to understand a story or the arguments of a discussion.
In the native language, the choice of reading strategy is usually automatic. In a foreign language, most people tend to read word for word. And if a word is unknown, the whole flow of reading is often stopped, regardless of whether this word is relevant to my reading goal or not. This is why many learners of German often find reading in German tedious and exhausting.
But that’s not even necessary. With the right technique and a little practice, you can read your texts effortlessly and crack even difficult texts such as employment contracts.
In a focus course for reading skills, you train to read texts efficiently and more easily. You also practise dealing with unknown words in texts: Are they really relevant? Can I find the meaning myself? And should I learn all the unknown words afterwards?
This course is aimed at adults with German as a foreign language who would like to improve their reading skills.
